Promoting Social Cohesion
On June 5, 2025, Tideline Foundation joined the Berkeley Center for American Democracy (BCAD) for a presentation on one of the country’s most pressing challenges: reducing polarization and strengthening social cohesion. Featuring Tideline founder Ron Epstein and BCAD Director David Broockman, the event focused on how Americans can sustain democratic life in an age of deep division.
The presentation reflected a core belief behind Tideline’s work: disagreement is inevitable, but destructive polarization is not. As trust declines and political opponents are increasingly viewed as enemies, civic life becomes harder to maintain. Tideline’s response is to help build a stronger common American identity, expand support for national service, and strengthen civic education.
The event also highlighted BCAD’s research on polarization, democratic norms, civic identity, and the role institutions can play in rebuilding trust. Together, Tideline and BCAD pointed toward a shared goal: a healthier civic culture grounded in common purpose, stronger democratic habits, and the belief that Americans can disagree without falling apart.
